Breaking the Cycle

In the heart of the Kurdistan Region, many young men leaving the state care system face a daunting reality. Having endured trauma and instability, many find it difficult to stay in the traditional education system. In one home we served, only one boy out of twenty was still in school.

Without education or family support, these young men often face a precarious future.

  • Overcoming Barriers to Employment

In an attempt to protect themselves from the world, many of these young men carry physical reminders of their past—scars and tattoos, often on their faces and hands. In a conservative culture, these outward signs can lead to immediate judgment.

When they turn 18 and must leave the orphanage system, they often find themselves:

  • Without a Support Network: No family to turn to for housing or guidance.
  • Excluded from Work: Faced with significant stigma due to their appearance and lack of formal schooling.
  • At High Risk: Facing potential homelessness, crime, or imprisonment as a means of survival.

Seeing Beyond the Scars

At Hope for Communities, we believe that if you look beyond the tattoos and the history, you find young men with incredible potential and much to contribute to society.

The Hope Hub was created to be their “proving ground.” By operating as a professional coffee shop, it provides a safe, structured environment where these young men can:

  1. Receive professional hospitality training.
  2. Gain tangible work experience for their CVs.
  3. Build the soft skills required to thrive in any workplace.

Holistic Mentorship & Life Skills

Employment is only one piece of the puzzle. We have a dedicated mentor who works individually with each young person to help them navigate the transition to independent adulthood. Because every journey is different, our support is deeply personal:

  • Essential Life Skills: For those in temporary accommodation, we provide hands-on training in cooking, nutrition, and home maintenance.
  • Housing Advocacy: For young men facing homelessness, we step in to help find and secure safe, stable accommodation.
  • Goal Setting & Coaching: We provide “Work Readiness” coaching, helping each individual set realistic goals and take the first positive steps toward a career.

A Foundation of Trust

None of this would be possible without the years we spent inside the orphanages. The trust we built playing games and sharing stories is the foundation upon which these young men now build their new lives.
