Beyond the Walls: Our Work in Government Orphanages

Since 2021, Hope for Communities has been invited into government orphanages across Sulaymaniyah. What began as weekly visits has grown into deep-rooted partnerships across multiple homes, categorized by age and gender. Our mission is simple: to ensure no child is forgotten and every young person feels seen.

Early Childhood: Creating Moments of Joy (Ages 0–5)
For children under five, the orphanage is often their entire world. Because they aren’t yet in school, they rarely have the chance to leave the grounds.

  • Fortnightly Adventures: We take the children on outings to soft play centers and zoos, giving them a taste of the world outside.
  • Intentional Play: On alternate weeks, our team brings the “fun” to them, providing toys, books, and activities that stimulate development and provide the comfort of a consistent presence.

Building Foundations: Storytelling and Structure (Ages 5–12)
Working with a house full of energetic boys is rewarding—and exhausting! We’ve introduced structured activities that were initially met with skepticism but are now the highlight of their week.

A Story of Change: When we first suggested “story time,” the local staff laughed, doubting 20 young boys would sit still. Today, it is a cherished ritual. The boys sit quietly for a snack and a story—and now, some of the boys even volunteer to read to the group.

Mentorship and Trust: Connecting with Young Men (Ages 12–18)
Building trust with teenagers requires patience and resourcefulness. We started where they were—playing Uno, sharing video games, and simply chatting. As these friendships grew, we began taking them out for activities like swimming. We didn’t just provide a trip to the pool; we taught many of these young men how to swim for the very first time.

These relationships were so impactful that they inspired two of our flagship projects: our Apprenticeship Programme and the Hope Hub.

Systemic Change: Training and Tutoring
As the orphanage managers witnessed the transformation in the children, our role expanded. We no longer just visit; we are partners in their development:

  • Educational Support: When children struggle with school, our staff provides 1:1 tutoring.
  • Caregiver Training: We were recently invited to provide professional training for the orphanage staff. By empowering their daily caregivers, we are improving the quality of life for these children 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

How You Can Help Us Say “Yes”
The demand for our presence is increasing. The orphanages have asked us for more training, more tutoring, and more time in the homes.

Your support allows us to expand our team and meet these requests. Every donation helps us provide a consistent, loving presence for children who need it most.
